What to Expect: Finding the Right Therapist

Updated: Sep 29, 2020

Not just any therapist will work. You have to find 'the one.'

Are you new to therapy? Congratulations! Read on to find out more on how to navigate finding the right therapist for you. Tried a therapist and thought therapy wasn't for you? It might have been the wrong fit with your therapist. Been around the block a few times? Know there are some therapists you enjoyed and some you didn't? Guess what? You aren't the only one! And it's okay that not every therapist worked for you.

Therapy can only progress when you feel supported by your therapist and safe in therapy. In order for that to happen, you have to have a good therapeutic relationship... basically, you have to jive with them.

Do you get along with everyone in the world? Probably not. So it makes sense that you wouldn't get along with every therapist. But as the relationship with your therapist is core for your progress and getting out of therapy what you want and need, it's so important to not just settle for the first one you meet.

How to find the right therapist

First, check out their profile on Psychology Today or look at their website. What kind of clients are they stating they are seeking? Do you match? What kind of tone are they setting? Does it make you feel good? Yes, give it a try!! No... then maybe keep looking.

But what if there are waiting lists everywhere and THAT therapist is the only one open? Let's consider an alternative explanation: maybe they aren't great at sharing their focus or personality in writing. Try calling and talking to them on the phone.

Still not sure? It's okay to meet with a therapist to see how you feel in person, in their office. And it's okay to not want to go back if you don't want to. You are under NO obligation to that therapist. Therapists know that they can't meet everyone's needs. Get this, most therapists will even help you find a new therapist if you tell them you don't think it's working with them.
